trend blend: dark florals + metallic oxfords

Just when you thought you’d seen enough flowery, petalled patterns on the shelves, the classic floral dress gets a much needed makeover. Lately, some of the finest labels (D&G, DKNY, Alexander McQueen, to name a few) have been trading up the beloved pastel-hued flower prints for richer, darker florals. This fresh facelift is perfect for those who could never abandon the quintessential feminine pattern, but at the same time are looking to upgrade their wardrobe to a higher level of sophistication.

Since darker patterns can easily turn drab and dull, take a cue from the perpetually fashion-forward Olivia Palermo and pair a dark floral dress with dazzling metallic Oxfords. Menswear-inspired shoes are the it-shoe of the season, but rather than playing it safe with a typical brown oxford, add a little pizzazz to your outfit by opting for an eye-popping shade of silver, gold, or copper.

The dark floral dress:

Paul Smith, $405; Alexander McQueen, $898; Lanvin, $1690

Miss Selfridge, $48; Dorothy Perkins, $44; Warehouse, $16

The metallic Oxford:

Michael Kors, $250; Esquivel, $238; Maison Martin, $417

Not Rated, $35; Verlain, $219; Jessica Simpson, $49
